Main Line Scholastic Sailing Association Presents Awards - Malvern Wins Championship - August 4, 2016
The Main Line Scholastic Sailing Association recently awarded its 2016 Philadelphia School Year Championship known as the Bell Cup at its Annual Awards Banquet at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia in Essington. The Malvern Prep team, led by “A” boat skipper Kieran Cullen with crew Pat Sayers and “B” boat skipper Louis Margay and crew Tommy Pero, won the Overall Championship after consistently outperforming the other teams over the course of both the fall and spring seasons. READ MORE

Davis '14 Qualifies for U.S. Amateur Golf Championship
July 20, 2016
Michael Davis '14 qualified to play in this year's U.S. Amateur Golf Championship by shooting 71 at White Manor C.C. in the morning and another 71 in the afternoon at Aronimink G.C. on July 20. His 142 total finished in a tie for fourth place with the low 5 scores qualifying for the U.S. Amateur, which will be played at Oakland Hills C.C. in the suburbs of Detroit,  August 15-21. Malvern Seniors Embark on College Athletic Careers

With the calendar passing mid-July, college-bound student athletes are preparing for their upcoming seasons at the next level. This year, 35 students from the Malvern Prep Class of 2016, nearly one-third of the class, will be participating in collegiate athletics. Harrington Named Daily Local News First Team All-Area Tennis - July 12, 2016
Harrington became the Friars’ first undefeated Inter-Ac champion in 28 years. A senior heading to Bucknell, Harrington’s overall record at No. 1 singles was 10-1. “He was our best player, our captain and our leader,” said Malvern head coach Anthony DeCecco. READ MORE

Updike Wins PA Junior Boys Golf Championship - June 28, 2016
A steady and solid performance over 36 holes meant victory for Aronimink Golf Club's John Updike '19 at the 2016 Pennsylvania Junior Boys' Championship, presented by Allegheny Health Network, at Hershey Country Club. Updike shot matching rounds of even par 71 to claim the title by one shot over PAGA Individual Member Karsen Rush. READ MORE

Ravert '12 Signs Pro Baseball Contract - July 16, 2016
Recent La Salle graduate Joey Ravert (MP'12) signed a professional contract last Thursday afternoon with the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am Professional Baseball League. By Thursday evening, he was on the mound making his pitching debut. READ MORE

Friars Make their Mark on All-Area, All-Main Line Teams

Malvern Prep's spring season success was reflected in the recent selections of the All-Area and All-Main Line teams. In Track & Field, Colin Wills was named Second Team All -Area; and Aaron Shirker, Dan Ford and Peter Borger were Honorable Mention. In Baseball, Jimmy Kingsbury, Shane Muntz, Cam Williams and Jake Mullen were named First Team All-Area; and Bill Ford earned Honorable Mention honors. In Lacrosse, Kyle Anderson, Mike Fay and Adam Goldner were named First Team All-Main Line; Ryan Murray, Billy Coyle and Quinn McCahon were named Second Team, and Pat Finley, Jarrett Donaghy and Sean Christman were named Honorable Mention.


Beard '18 Wins Gold at Pan-Am Wrestling Championships in Peru

Malvern's Michael Beard '18 romped through the Freestyle 85 kg weight class on route to a gold medal at the 2016 Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Lima, Peru, July 1-3. After grabbing two technical falls in his first two bouts, Beard scored another tech fall 10-0 in the championship match. On the first day of competition, Beard claimed a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman 85 kg tournament.

"It’s an unbelievable accomplishment for him, his family and Malvern wrestling," said Malvern Head Wrestling Coach Nate Lautar '98. "Michael is one of the leaders of Malvern Prep Wrestling, and he is shining in the spotlight." Read more at

Anderson '16 Competes in All-America Lacrosse Game

Malvern's Kyle Anderson '16 was credited with being a key facilitator on offense as he helped lead the South team to a 23-16 win over the North squad at the 2016 Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Game at Towson University on July 2. The game was televised live on ESPNU. Anderson, who is headed to Harvard University, was named All-Inter-Ac First Team, All-State and U.S. Lacrosse All-American this year. Read more about the game. Malvern Sailing Wins Second Straight Bell Cup Season Championship

The task was not easy, be the rewards were great. After competing in more 80 races throughout the fall and spring seasons the team was awarded both the Spring Championship Bowl and the Bell Cup for the overall Championship of the Main Line Scholastic Sailing Association (MLSSA) on June 12 at Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia. READ MORE

Friars Help State Rugby Teams Capture East Regional Championships

Malvern's Jack Ludin was a key cog for the Pennsylvania Varsity Rugby Team that went undefeated at the U.S. Rugby East Regional Tournament June 18-19 in Albany, N.Y., to claim the championship. Brendan Devine helped the Pa. JV team to its own undefeated championship, while Scott Stratton contributed to a strong showing by the Pa. Middle School team, who lost its first match, but rallied to win it consolation match. Malvern Head Coach Matt Boccuti was one of the coaches for the JV squad. Read more from

Friars Finish Second in Final Inquirer Baseball Poll; Muntz Leads All-Southeastern Pa. Selections - June 21, 2016
The Friar baseball team finished 28-6 overall and 7-3 in the Inter-Ac to earn a share of the league title. The Philadelphia Inquirer ranked them second in Southeastern Pa. in its final poll. Catcher Shane Muntz was named to the All-Southeastern Pa. First Team. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound junior and Wake Forest recruit hit .360 with 27 RBIs and 35 walks. As a righthanded pitcher, Muntz went 4-1 with a 2.07 ERA. Pitcher Billy Corcoran was named to the Second Team, while infielder Cam Williams was named to the Third Team. See the full lists.

Austin Velte '12, Yale senior rower and Ivy League Cup champ - June 14, 2016
Austin Velte (Malvern Class of 2012) couldn’t have asked for a better final race. Earlier this May, the senior captain with the Yale University rowing team led his eights crew to a sweep of the Ivy League Championships. It marked Yale’s first league title since 2002 — long before the part-time Summit County local and native of Philadelphia joined the Yale eights — and earned the team an invite to the United Kingdom this coming week for the Henley Royal Regatta, where they’ll go boat-to-boat against a few of the biggest, baddest, most prestigious clubs in the university rowing scene on the fabled Thames River. Malvern Rowers Show Promise at USRowing Youth Nationals
June 11, 2016
Malvern Rowing has reason to be proud of a successful season and look to a bright future as the team raced to solid finishes at the USRowing Youth National Championships at Mercer Lake, N.J. The Varsity Quad won their heat, finished second in the semis, and fifth in the A final, which is Malvern's best finish since 2013 when the Quad finished third. Malvern's Varsity Light Double finished second in the heat, fourth in the semis by one second, and third in the B final. The Varsity Heavy Double did not progress out of heats as repechages were cancelled to unsafe racing conditions. The semis and finals were moved up to Saturday, with impending poor weather predicted on Sunday. The competition was fierce with many clubs and schools from the West Coast, Midwest and Northeast regions.The boys raced well, with only two seniors among the eight athletes racing for Malvern. Wills Sets Mile School Record at Distance Festival

Colin Wills capped his scholastic running career by setting the Malvern school record in the mile run in 4:15.52, good for a fifth-place finish at the John Hay Memorial Distance Festival at West Chester Henderson High School. Three Friars Qualify for Olympic Swimming Trials
June 5, 2016
For the first time in school history, Malvern Prep has qualified three athletes for the 2016 Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., later this month. On June 5 in Columbus, Ohio, Brandon Fronczak '15 joined Billy Beard '16 and C.J. Schaffer '14 as a qualifier to compete for a potential birth in the 2016 Olympics.

Alumni Rowers Shine at Collegiate Championships

Malvern alumni had a great day at the 2016 Intercollegiate Rowing Chamionships at Mercer Lake, N.J. Julian Venonsky '12 and his Cal Varsity Heavyweight Varsity 8 upset Yale in the finals today, winning Gold. Jimmy McManus '14 and his Cornell Varsity Lightweight 4 won Gold, as well. Austin Velte '12 and his Yale Varsity Lightweight 8 won silver behind Columbia. Jim Sincavage '14 won bronze with his Princeton Varsity Lightweight 8.

Rowing's Championship Season - Set to Compete at Youth National Championships

The Malvern Preparatory School Rowing team had a successful 2016 spring season. Under the leadership of coach Craig Hoffman and the team’s three seniors, the Friars successful regular season positioned them to medal at three championship regattas: The Philadelphia City Championships, The Stotesbury Cup and Scholastic Rowing National Championship. The small team of 18 rowers worked flexibly and diligently to post competitive results. READ MORE

Baseball Takes Second in State Tournament, Finishes Season 28-6
June 2, 2016
Malvern defeated Germantown Academy 7-3 in the quarters and Mercersburg 9-5 in the semis, but fell to the Haverford School 3-0 in extra innings in the title game of the independent school state tournament. The Friars finish the season 28-6 and ranked #1 in the latest Philadelphia Inquirer poll. Against GA, Shane Muntz pitched five strong innings for the win, and Jake Mullen and Matt Daller each drove in two runs, with Daller going yard. Against Mercersburg, Daller and Vincent Sposato each went deep to lead the Friars. Jimmy Kingsbury got the win.

Rugby Lands Three on All-State Team - May 29, 2016
Three Malvern Rugby players will be representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. Rugby Regional Cup Tournament June 18-19 in Albany, N.Y. They are: Jack Ludin - Varsity side (11-12th grade); Brendan Devine - JV side (9-10th grade); and Scott Stratton - Middle School side. READ MORE

Schaffer '14 Qualifies for Swimming Olympic Trials - May 31, 2016
Rising junior C.J. Schaffer, Malvern Prep Class of 2014, of the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials this past Saturday at the Berkeley Aquatic Club Memorial Day Meet. Schaffer punched a ticket in the 200 breast, racing to a time of 2:17.1 in one of the final tune-ups for the trials set for June 26 - July 3 in Omaha, Neb. Schaffer touched the wall more than a second faster than the qualifying mark, which stands at 2:18.39. READ MORE

Congratulations to alumnus Charles Kelly '15, who helped the North Carolina Tar Heels win the 2016 NCAA Division I Lacrosse National Championship. the freshman face-off specialist was 3-7 in face-offs for the game, which saw North Carolina beat Maryland 14-13 in overtime at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Their postgame celebration may have been somewhat subdued, but the Malvern Prep Friars clinched their sixth straight Inter-Ac baseball championship with a 9-2 win over Germantown Academy. The Friars excelled behind the stellar pitching of Sean Flynn and Jimmy Kingsbury as well a strong batting performance from the top to the bottom of the line-up. Needing to win each of its last five contests, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy remained on course in every way possible. Despite a plethora of injuries that necessitated learning new positions on the fly – no pun intended – they performed physically. Despite lingering doubt from naysayers, they stayed confident. Despite mental fatigue, they persevered. That explains SCH’s joyous reaction Friday afternoon, when a line drive to left field was inhaled by senior Gunnar Hayes for the final out, thus allowing the Blue Devils to finally exhale with a thrilling 6-5 victory over host Malvern Prep.  Springside Chestnut Hill Academy had joined Malvern as the 2016 Inter-Academic League co-champion. Rowing Claims Four Medals at Stotesbury Cup Regatta
May 21, 2016
Malvern Rowers competed in four finals at the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, the largest high school regatta in the world. Malvern finished second in the Varsity Heavyweight Quad final, third in the Varsity Lightweight Double final, third in the Junior Quad final, and sixth in the Varsity Heavyweight Double final. The racing was close and competitive in a deep field of schools. Malvern travels to Ohio for Scholastic Nationals May 27-28.

Lacrosse Falls to Haverford in Inter-Ac Challenge Semis - May 21, 2016
The game began with the Malvern Prep Friars feeling electric. Senior attackman Adam Goldner scored the first goal for MP and teammate Addison Mueller added another 58 seconds later. Malvern and Haverford exchanged goal after goal throughout the first period, which ended with the Fords leading by a slim margin of 5-4. Track & Field Finishes Fourth in Tight Inter-Ac Race, Rebounds for Third at States

Only six points separated second through fourth places in the Inter-Ac Track & Field Championships on May 14 that saw Germantown Academy run away with the league title with 123.15 team points, followed by host Penn Charter with 88 points, Haverford with 82.25 points and Malvern with 82 points. Colin Wills had an outstanding day for the Friars, finishing first in the 1,600-meter run in 4:26.13, first in the 800-meter run in 1:56.83, second (by one-tenth of a second) in the 3,200-meter run in 9:58.54, and anchoring the fourth-place 4x400-meter relay team. Other Malvern top performers include: Justin Titchnell, first in the shot put in 46-08.5; Phil DiTrolio, third in the long jump in 21-3 and fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11:51; David Bolles, third in the triple jump in 41-02 and fifth in the long jump in 20-09.5; Aaron Shirker, third in the high jump in 6-2; Sean Oates, third in the pole vault in 10-6; Brian Boyle, fourth in the 200-meter run in 23.14; and Peter Borger, fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:10.20. At Pennsylvania Independent School States on May 18, the Friars took third place with 70.5 points, behind host The Hill School and Germantown Academy. Colin Wills again led the Friars, winning the 800-meter run in 1:58.77 and finishing second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:25.54. Main Line baseball wrapup: Malvern Prep improves to 20-4 with win - May 12, 2016
The Malvern Prep baseball squad beat Episcopal Academy, 9-4, Thursday to improve to 20-4 (6-2 Inter-Ac). Jimmy Kingsbury (8-0) came in relief and was the winning pitcher going 3.2 innings, striking out three and letting up no runs. Billy Corcoran finished it out, pitching two innings of shutout baseball and striking out three. Offensively for Malvern, Shane Muntz went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Nick Li also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Cam Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jake Mullan (one double), Sean Flynn, Tyler Pizzico, and Vince Sposato also had RBIs, and Matt Daller had two hits. Malvern Alumni Rowers Enjoy Success at College Championship Races

Former Malvern rowers had a huge weekend. Julian Venonsky '12 was in the winning Varsity 8 for Cal Berkeley, beating defending national champion Washington at the PAC 12's. Austin Velte '12 won the Varsity Lightweight 8 at Eastern Sprints with Yale. Velte was also named First Team All-Ivy League. JP Clark '14 won Dad Vail yesterday for Drexel. Jim Sincavage '14 and Jimmy McManus '14 won medals at Dad Vails for Princeton and Cornell. Chris Mudrick '13, Holy Cross, Mike Lewers '12, Georgetown, Jackson Connor '14, Penn, and Chris Frey '14, Dartmouth, all competed at Eastern Sprints. Alex Stoczko '13, Trinity, competed in the ECAC/NIRC last weekend.

Ben Davis '95 Makes Right with Phillies Fan

If you watched the Phillies-Reds game on Sunday, you may have seen Joey Votto of the Reds fake throwing a foul ball to a young Phillies fan, only to pull it back. What you didn't see, as Phillies broadcaster Ben Davis '95 recounted on WIP Tuesday morning, was that Davis was so fired up about that classless act that he went down between innings to give the boy a ball - but on his way down he remembered that Mike Schmidt was in the booth, so he went back up and got Schmidt to sign the ball before giving it to the boy! That is Caritas in action!

Senior Slugger is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

Senior second baseman and designated hitter Cam Williams is leading the Inter-Ac contenders in most offensive categories, batting .404 from the No. 3 spot with a .517 on-base percentage and .574 slugging percentage, 18 runs scored and 15 RBIs as of May 9. Malvern Prep baseball head coach Freddy Hilliard said, “He’s really helped to fill a big void in our lineup from all the production that graduated last season.”  Read more from PaPrepLive.

Wills Leads Friars at Nike Henderson Track & Field Invite

Colin Wills ran 1:54.93 to take second place in the 800-meter run at the Henderson Track & Field Invite, one of the top track meets in the state each year. Other top performers for Malvern were Aaron shirker, who took third place in the high jump at 6-0, and David Bolles, who took third place in the triple jump at 41-05. Full results.

Harrington Completes Undefeated Season for Malvern Tennis

Malvern Prep’s Tennis regular season ended on Tuesday with a home match against the Haverford School. Haverford won 6-1, but James Harrington won at first singles, ending the season as the undefeated Inter-Ac Champion! Malvern ended the season with a 3-8 record and will compete in the Inter-Ac Tournament May 16 and 17.

Rowing Qualifies Two Boats for Nationals at Mid-Atlantic Regionals

Malvern rowers in the Varsity Lightweight Double and Varsity Quad events qualified their boats for USRowing Youth National Championships in June, racing the 2,000-meter distance. The Lightweight Double finished first with the fastest time of the light and heavyweight double events. The Varsity Heavy Quad finished second, and a spirited Malvern Freshman Quad finished second in the Under 17 event. The Varsity Heavy Double finished fifth in the final after winning a heat and semifinal Saturday night. Full results.

Rowing Wins Three at City Championships

Malvern Rowing had a good day, rowing in five events at the Philadelphia City Championships. Malvern won three races, Varsity Heavy Double, Varsity Light Double and Varsity Lightweight Quad, finished second in the Varsity Heavyweight Quad, and finished fifth in the Freshman Quad finished. The Heavyweight Quad, Lightweight Quad, Lightweight Double and Heavyweight Double qualified for Scholastic Nationals in Ohio. Malvern rowing travels to Mercer N.J., for Youth National Qualifiers on Saturday.

The scarlet letter is worn as a badge of honor now, the running joke that just crushed a 4-minute mile. Sunday night baseball practice. Freshman year. Joey Ravert asked his La Salle coaches if he could leave early to attend Mass. Malvern alumnus and Georgtown University senior Kyle Naser '12 sang an outstanding rendition of the National Anthem before a Hoya men's basketball game this March at the Verizon Center in Washington. Naser is a cadet in Georgetown's ROTC and will be attending artillery school in October. He sang with Malvern's Liturgical Music Group as a student.

The career arc for Malvern Prep’s Michael Beard has been a steep one, so far. As a freshman, Beard finished runner-up at prep states and prep nationals. The natural progression, as a sophomore, would be to win one or both of the prep postseason tournaments. Beard did just that, defeating Wyoming Seminary’s Christian Dietrich in the finals of states and nationals. He's just 5-foot-8 and about 150 pounds, so perhaps the element of surprise is Billy Coyle's best friend on the lacrosse field. When all else fails, however, a lefthanded laser also does the trick. The Malvern Prep junior employed both Saturday as the Friars led early, came from behind late, and eventually survived visiting Garnet Valley, 11-10, on Coyle's game-winning goal with 2.9 seconds left. Sailing Team Lets Out the Sail for Spring Season at New York Regatta

The Malvern Sailing team kicked off its 2016 spring season with a regatta at SUNY Maritime College on Saturday. Louis Margay and Tommy Pero stepped up into the A boat, while Brendan Lord drove and Pat Sayers crewed the B boat. Wothout any practice days, the Malvern team sailed well in a new location and finished in 12th place overall against schools from NY, CT and NJ.  The boys are also expected to travel to Tom’s River Yacht Club this Saturday for the Spring Fleet Championship of the New Jersey Division of our Mid-Atlantic Conference. Malvern begins its defense of its 2015 Philly Championship this Sunday at Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia.

Wills Competes at New Balance Indoor Nationals Track Meet

Colin Wills ran a 4:19.65 to finish in seventh place in the Boys' Emerging Elite Mile Run at the New Balance Indoor National Meet in New York. Hockey Beats Carroll, Falls to La Salle in Flyers Cup

In the Flyers Cup tournament, the Malvern Ice Hockey team beat Archbishop Carroll 6-3 in the quarterfinal round on March 3 to advance the semifinals, where they dropped an 8-0 decision to La Salle on March 8.

As the three seed entering the tournament, Malvern got a bye into the second round, in which they dispatched Carroll behind two goals by Joey Abel and three assists by Joey D'Elia. Number two seed La Salle advances to face top seed Holy Ghost in the finals. See the game box scores.

Malvern Wrestling takes 3rd at National Preps – Beard, Janney win titles

Over the past few years since Nate Lautar took over the Malvern Prep wrestling program, the talent has followed. This past weekend, things came together about as good as possible for the Friars, who competed in the National Prep tournament at Lehigh University. Eleven Friars qualified for the prestigious tournament and nine walked away with hardware, including two champs, sophomore Mike Beard (182 pounds) and junior Seth Janney (220). Swimming & Diving Takes Third at Easterns
February 26, 2016
Malvern Prep capped its final weekend of its season by bringing home a third place team finish at the 116th Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championship at La Salle University. The Friars were led by strong relay finishes and solid individual efforts to score 282.5 points to finish in third place behind Peddie, N.J., and the Haverford School.

Malvern Prep started the meet with a third place in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Dan Waterland, William Schaffer, Zach Maher and Billy Beard went 134.64 for the bronze medal. Maher, Lou Franzone, John Connors and Beard finished in fourth place for the 400 free relay, while the team of Maher, Connors, Franzone and Schaffer took seventh place in the 200 free relay. Individually, the Friars were led by Schaffer who was third in the 100 breast and fourth in 100 back. Beard was ​fifth in 100 free and seventh in the 50 free. Aaron Salinas was fourth in 100 breast; Maher was sixth in the 100 fly; and diver Trevor Henderson finished seventh. Other point scorers in the meet for the Friars were Connors (200 and 100 free), Brett Mastrangelo (200 and 500 free), Waterland (200 IM and 100 back), Ryan Maher (100 fly) and Patrick Sayers (diving).

Billy Beard, Zach Maher, William Schaffer and Aaron Salinas all secured All-American status for the season. Malvern earned its fourth consecutive Inter-Ac title this season.

Malvern Prep junior Zach Maher is a High School All-American as member of the Friars’ school record-holding 200 free relay and 200 medley relay teams. As Easterns, he placed third, fourth and seventh as member of Malvern Prep relays and placed sixth in the 100 fly. He was a leader on Malvern Prep’s Inter-Ac championship swimming and diving team. Malvern’s Brady to Coach at Women’s World Tackle Football Games

Malvern Prep teachers and coaches consistently encourage their students to step out of their comfort zones, as that is often the best way to gain deep knowledge. Millsy Meets Nassib at the NFL Combine

Malvern Head Athletic Trainer Bill "Millsy" Mills is conducting CYBEX knee testing at the NFL Draft Combine February 26-29. This year marks the fourth time that Millsy has been asked to work at the combine. He will be measuring knee performance through a two-speed bi-lateral Isokinetic knee test with a HUMAC (CYBEX) NORM Extremity System - which Malvern Prep has in its own athletic training room. Millsy has the unique opportunity to test Malvern alum Carl Nassib '11, who will be attending the combine after a standout season at Penn State.

Malvern Prep took second place at the state wrestling championships behind Wyoming Seminary, who won its 10th consecutive PAISWT team title. The host Friars crowned three champions and five runner-ups. With his fourth finals appearance, Matt Lattanze won the Ron Nelson award for most team points in a four-year span. Taking first place for the Friars were: Shane Hanson-Ashworth at 106, Michael Beard at 182 and Seth Janney at 220. Wills Takes First in 800 Meters at Indoor Track Philly-area Meet of Champions
February 20, 2016
Colin Wills ran to a first-place finish in 1:57.48 in the 800-meter run at the Greater Philadelphia Area Track Coaches Association Meet of Champions at Lehigh University. Aaron Shirker set a personal record in the high jump, finishing in 14th place with a jump of 5-11. Full results. Wills will be competing in the mile run, in which he has run 4:20 this season, and the 800-meter run at the Pennsylvania State Indoor Track Championships at Penn State on Sunday. Basketball Gets by Shipley, Falls to Westtown in State Tournament

Malvern defeated Shipley 72-60 in the first round of the PA independent school state tournament. Will Powers poured in 23 points, while Mike Hollingsworth had a tremendous game with 17 points 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Hitting the Weights: Friars Compete in Intramural Strong-off Competition
February 18, 2016
Every sport at Malvern Prep does some sort of weight training, guided by the School's Strength Coach Erik Miller, who helps design programs for each discipline. There are some lifts, though, that help everyone, and these three elemental lifts, the squat, bench press and deadlift, were contested this month by Malvern students to see who was the overall and pound-for-pound champ. Justin Titchnell took home the overall title in all three lifts, setting a school record in the deadlift at 575 pounds! Check out the video posted on the Malvern Strength Facebook page. He also took first place in the bench press at 335 pounds, as well as the squat at 500 pounds. Adam Goldner was the pound-for-pound winner in each lift: 385 pounds in the squat (2.11 x body weight), 275 pounds in the bench press (1.5 x body weight) and 475 pounds in the deadlift (2.61 x body weight). In the bench press, Sam Sweeney also pressed 1.5 times his body weight with a press of 245 pounds.

Flyers Cup Selection Show to Be Live Streamed Sunday

The Eastern PA Interscholastic Hockey Association will be presenting the Flyers Cup team selections and seeding at its third annual Selection Sunday - Live event at the Brick House on Easton Road in Willow Grove on February 21 at noon. The show will feature live, in-person interviews with the head coaches and players of top teams. The event will also be broadcast with live streaming and will feature team profiles of each team's leading scorer, best defenseman, notable seniors and scholar athletes.  

Malvern JV Hockey Wins 2016 President's Cup
February 12, 2016
Malvern JV Ice Hockey won 4 -1 against West Chester Rustin in Friday night's championship game to capture the 2016 ICHSL President's Cup. It was a banner season for Malvern JV, tallying up a perfect record at 16 - 0 - 0 with 97 goals scored and only 22 goals against this season. In the season finale, Malvern had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way. Jimmy Bell had a great game for Malvern, netting two goals. Bell's tallies came in the first period to make the score 2-0 Malvern and then at 11:40 into the first to make the score 3-0 Malvern. Malvern's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Rustin power plays. Nick Fantini registered one goal and one assist. Kosta Hionis scored the other Malvern goal. Malvern received  assists from Charlie Andress, who had two, and Mike Sheehan, Jack Hamilton and Dylan Tran, who each chipped in one. Sean Danahy made 26 saves in goal on 27 shots.

Indoor Track Gears Up for Championship Races

At the Philadelphia Track Coaches Association Meet at Lehigh University, Anthony Ciro took fourth place in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:34.99. Sebastian Constantini took sixth place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-10.5, breaking his own Malvern freshman record of 39-1.5 set a week before. The previous freshman mark was 36-8.5 set by Wallace Spencer '10. Aaron Shirker claimed sixth place in the high jump at 5-8. Full results. Haverford School comes back from deficit to beat Malvern Prep - February 5, 2015

Swimming Posts New Records at Inter-Ac Championships

February 3, 2016
As the host team at the Boys' Inter-Ac Championships, the Friars established two new pool and team relay records and had several strong individual performances. In the the 200 Medley Relay, William Schaffer, Aaron Salinas, Zach Maher and Billy Beard beat their own pool record with a time of 1:34.45 (old pool record was 1:35.02) and broke the 2014 school mark of 1:34.58. In the 200 free relay the same group set a new pool and school Mark of 1:25.56 breaking the old pool record of 1:27.02 established by Germantown Academy in 2004 and the team record from 2014 of 1:25.82. Beard was also a gold medal winner on the day in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.39 and was a member of the second place 400 free relay team with Maher, John Connors and Louie Franzone in a time of 3:13.10. Other highlights for the Friars were: Brett Mastrangelo, third in 200 free (1:48.64); Salinas second in 50 free (21.63) and third in the 100 breast (1:00.30); Ryan Maher, third in 100 fly (53.79); and Schaffer, second in100 breast (59.02).

Rowing Grinds to Strong Showing at Off-season Erg Challenge

Brett Allan led a strong showing of Friars with a first-place finish in the lightweight division at the Philadelphia Erg Challenge at St. Joe's Prep, in which rowers competed for top distance covered for 20 minutes on ergometers. Allan covered  5,544 meters at a pace of 1:48.2. Malvern also placed 5th, 8th, and 12th in a field of 45 competitors in the lightweight division (under 165 pounds). Malvern finished 6th, 7th, 10th, and 15th out of 47 competitors  in the heavyweight division. Malvern won the Freshman 1,500 race against 30 competitors. Full results.

Malvern Prep never trailed in the meet despite only winning three events, instead relying on its trademark team depth. Billy Beard, Will Schaffer, Zach Maher and Aaron Salinas were all members of the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:39.25) and 200 Free Relay (1:28.94). Beard was also the winner in the 50 free (22.01) with Maher second and Schaffer third to give Malvern a comfortable lead which they were able to hold on to through the final event. Malvern Prep finishes its dual meet season 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Inter-Ac League.

Defensive end Riley Ammerman will play football for the University of New Hampshire; defensive back Rashon Lusane will play for Morgan State University; and tight end Ian Murray will play for the College of the Holy Cross. Billy Beard and John Connors were each quadruple event winners for Malvern as the team remains undefeated in Inter-Ac League action. Beard won the 100 fly in pool-record time 52.03 as well as the 200 free (1:44.07) and teamed with Connors on the 400 free relay with Zach Maher and Lou Franzone. Beard, Connors, Franzone and Will Schaffer were winners in the 200 free relay. Connors also won the 50 free and teamed with Schaffer, Isaac Salinas and Maher to win the 200 medley relay. Schaffer and Maher tripled as winners, adding the 100 breast and 100 free events as wins for the Friars. Malvern Prep is now 5-1 overall and 3-0 league as it prepares to travel to Loyola, Md., for the National Catholic Championships this weekend.

Strong relay performances led the Friars to the win. Billy Beard was a member of all three winning relays for the Friars and took the 100 free in 47.16. Zach Maher was the other quadruple winner teaming with Beard on two relays and taking the 50 free (22.37) and 100 fly (52.90). Dan Waterland, Will Schaffer and Maher teamed with Beard for the winning 200 medley relay. Lou Franzone and John Connors teamed with Maher and Beard to win the 200 free relay. In a very exciting finish Beard, Schaffer, Connors and Franzone out-touched the GA relay by .08 in the final 400 free relay.  John Connors, 200 free (1:48.42), Will Schaffer, 100 back (55.17), Isaac Salinas, 100 breast (1:05.41) and Patrick Sayers, diving, were the other event winners for the Friars.

Downingtown East came close to giving away a three-goal lead to Malvern Prep, but did just enough to escape with a 4-3 victory. The largest advantage came when Downingtown East's scored its third goal in the first period to go up 3-0. Malvern Prep excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Malvern was led by Gabe Malek, who finished with two goals. Malek scored the first of his two goals in the second period to make the score 3-1. Nick Martino assisted on the tally. Malek's next tally made the score 4-3 closing in on the third period with Martino picking up the assist. Martino had the second goal for Malvern with an assist by Jimmy Bell. Matthew Hollinsghead stopped 23 shots out of 27 in goal.

Malvern Prep hosted the 2015 Delaware state champion Salesianum and came away with a 95-70 win to improve to 4-1 on the season in the non-league meet. Billy Beard and Louie Franzone led the way for Malvern with three wins each. Beard won the 200 and 100 freestyle events and was a member of the winning 200 free relay with Will Schaffer, Ryan Maher and Brett Mastrangelo. Franzone won the 50 free and 100 back and was on the winning 200 Medley Relay with Schaffer, Isaac Salinas and Zach Maher.

Friars Lead Club Team to U13 Lacrosse National Championship
December 30, 2015
Over the break, four 8th Grade Friars, Colin Dougherty, Champ Doyle, Drew Pettinelli and Cade Szostek participated in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions in Wesley Chapel, Fla., leading their Rising Sons Lacrosse 2020 team to the U13 Club Lacrosse National Championship.

The Rising Sons qualified for the tournament by winning the 2014 Brine Indian Summer Tournament in Jarrettsville, 
Md., and earned the top seed in the playoffs by rolling through pool play with a 5-0 mark. They 
continued their undefeated status in the playoffs, winning another three games including a 11-1 win over FCA 
National in the semifinals and then capped off the week by winning the championship game 11-5.

Malvern opened the Inter-Ac portion of their swim season with a strong win at Penn Charter. Zach Maher (200 free), Trevor Henderson (diving), Billy Beard (100 fly), Fran Curran (500 free), Daniel Waterland (100 back) were all individual event winners. Malvern also swept the relays.  Dan Waterland, Will Schaffer, Billy Beard and John Connors won the 200 Medley Relay; Beard, Maher, Schaffer and Connors won the 200 free relay; and Louie Franzone, Ryan Maher, Brett Mastrangelo and Cullen Robinson were victors in the 400 free relay. The Friars are 3-1 and 1-0 in league action.​

Boston College Senior Walk On Captain Steve Perpiglia Gets a Scholarship for Christmas - December 24, 2015
Malvern alumnus Steve Perpiglia '12 has played as a walk-on at Boston College for four years. The senior team captain was surprised with a full scholarship following BC's win over Fordham in the Barclays Center. Over 100 friends and relatives were on hand to support Steve. Coach Christian announced the scholarship to the team in the locker room and then went out to the arena and announced the news to Steve's parents, friends, and family. See the video.

The Friars also received assists from Nathan Jones, Nick Fantini, Angelo Tedesco, Charlie Andress and Gabe Malek. Matthew Hollingshead stopped 22 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Thanksgiving Eve at Cardinal O’Hara got started with a bang for both teams. The Friars received the opening kickoff and drove to the O’Hara 28. Then, QB Nick Maras handed the ball of to RB O’Shaan Allison who cut left towards the sideline. Allison pitched it back to WR Quinn McCahon for the reverse. As McCahon ran from Lions defenders in the backfield he threw it deep and found WR Chris Brown in the end zone for the opening score. McCahon went on to also catch a TD pass in the third quarter. Abel's Hat Trick Boosts Malvern Prep over La Salle in the "Battle of the Preps" at Wells Fargo Center
November 29, 2015
Malvern's Joey Abel scored his third goal with 21 seconds to play to help the Friars battle back from two one-goal deficits and take down La Salle 3-2 in front of more than 1,000 fans at the Wells Fargo Center in a special Thanksgiving "Broad Street Battle of the Preps" hockey showdown.

The Explorers led 1-0 after the first period, but the Friars kept pace with two goals by Able in the second period. Malvern's assists came from Nick Fantini, Gabe Malek, Nick Martino and Jimmy Bell.

“As Jimmy took it wide, I saw we had a 3-on-1 developing, so I just drove to the net. Jimmy slid it over to me and I heard it hit the back post and there’s no greater sound than that.” Abel said of the final goal. “It’s the biggest stage of anyone’s career here right now with all of our fans from the school coming out."

Junior goaltender Matthew Hollingshead  made 43 saves in the game. Malvern is now 4-0-1 on the season.

Penn State's Nassib is Big Ten defensive player of the year - December 1, 2015
Defensive end Carl Nassib, who came to Penn State as a walk-on, started his fifth and final year in the program known by few outside Happy Valley, but a dedicated mind-set and a ferocious way of practicing and playing earned him much notice as the nation's leader in sacks. The Big Ten coaches certainly noticed and voted Nassib, a West Chester resident and Malvern Prep graduate, as the conference's defensive player of the year. Malvern-Haverford Collaborate to Protect CRC Riverbank
November 24, 2015
While they are rivals on the river, last weekend Malvern Prep and Haverford School worked together to plant more than 400 trees and plants along the riverbank at the Conshohocken Rowing Center, the state-of-the-art boathouse the schools share with the Borough of Conshohocken. The plantings will help prevent soil erosion and beautify the landscape. More photos.

Pete Ciesielski '15 helped the Duquesne Dukes to the Northeast Conference football championship with a win over St. Francis. Duquesne earned an automatic birth in the FCS playoffs.

Country-rock musicians John Scargall '08 and Christian O'Conner '08 were featured on the Sports Illustrated Now program - check out the 21:15 mark for their interview about their hit son "Leave it on the Track," which is featured in the NASCAR 15 video game. “This is a show where country superstars like Lee Brice have performed ... where tons of sports legends have been interviewed,” Scargall said, “As a music and sports fan myself, this is absolutely incredible.”

Change at the top led to success for Malvern Prep soccer

When Andrew Kummerer was announced as the new head coach of the Malvern Prep soccer team, he had no previous knowledge about the program. For those invested in the program bringing an individual into the circle can either be an advantage or cause dissension. For the first time in program history, the Malvern Prep Wrestling team is nationally ranked, selected as #26 in the country by Intermat Wrestling! Junior Seth Janney is ranked #7 at 220 pounds, and sophomore Michael Beard is ranked #12 at 170 pounds. The defending Inter-Ac champs start their season on December 5 at the Wyoming Seminary Duals.

A goal by  Stephen D'Elia put Malvern Prep up 4-2 in the second period with Patrick Kavanaugh providing the assist, but DMA pulled to within one the third period. Joey Abel also tallied one goal and one assist, and Kavanaugh, who also had one goal to add to his assist, lead the team in points. Malvern Prep also got a goal from Nicholas Martino. Charlie Andress and Skyler Davis each had one assist. Matthew Hollingshead made 29 saves on 32 shots. Malvern Prep's offense rang up 46 shots and is now 3-0-0 on the season.

Malvern senior goalkeeper Rory Allen posted a .656 save percentage (second-best in school history) for the Malvern Prep water polo team, which posted a 23-4 record, won the Inter-Ac championship and placed second at the Eastern Prep Water Polo Championships. Malvern Sailing Wins Fall Season
November 8, 2015
The Malvern Sailing team, led by the strong and consistent  performances of its “A” and “B” boats, took the first step in defending its 2015 Bell Cup Championship by winning the Fall season of the MLSSA with multiple wins in both divisions on the final day of racing November 1. The results gave Malvern a commanding lead over the other competitors for the season - which saw nearly 80 races sailed over eight weekends - and has them in position heading into the Spring racing season to defend last year’s Philadelphia High School Championship win. The 2016 Bell Cup will be awarded in June to the winning Philadelphia High school for the combined Fall and Spring season totals. Team captain Kieran Cullen with crew Pat Sayers placed first in the tightly contested “A” Division this season, while Louis Margay and crew Tommy Pero also won the “B” Division with more victories than any other boat in the series.  Critical crew help and support was also provided to the team all season by newcomers Mikolaj Figurski, Ethan Surovcik and Will Himmelreich, who gained valuable experience in the 420 Open fleet. The team was recognized and awarded the trophy for its fall season victory at an awards banquet held at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia on November 8. 

Rowing Sets High Marks at Philly Regatta - Boat Dedication November 15

Malvern rowing had a good day racing in the Hidden River Chase Regatta against top Philadelphia crews. Malvern varsity quads finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, losing the race by less than a second to Roman Catholic. Malvern quad  rowers later raced again in the Varsity Double event, finishing 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th in a 23-boat field, losing to a composite boat. See full results. The team continues to improve as we go inside for the Winter Season. The team will be running for the next two weeks, getting ready for the Turkey Trot six mile race on Thanksgiving Day. Malvern Rowing will be dedicating tow boats on Sunday, November 15 at 10:15 a.m. at the Conshohocken Rowing Center.

O'Shaan Allison rushed for 253 yards on 20 carries with four touchdowns. Rashon Lusane added a 57-yard run in the first quarter. The Malvern defense played a significant role in the win, at one point forcing three straight "three and outs" from the Quakers. Malvern Prep improved to 6-1 in the Inter-Ac league and 20-3 overall with the win. The Friars had eight different goal scorers en route to the victory. Isaac Salinas led the way for Malvern with five goals. Stephen Salle had three goals and four assists. Nick Calvaresi, Liam Close, Bubbles Grant, Zach Maher, Tait McGlinn, Sean Oates and Aaron Salinas all found the back of the net for Malvern.

The Churchman took a 2-0 lead twelve minutes into the second half. About a minute later, the Friars countered when captain David Bettenhausen caught the Churchmen defense sleeping and scored off of a free kick from 20 yards out. After an EA goalie change, Malvern Prep knotted the game at 2 when Phil Kramer scored after a scramble in front of the net. The next ten minutes were dominated by the Friars, but EA capitalized on a counter attack for the deciding goal with less than five minutes to play.

Malvern Senior Battles Elements to Win Golf Invite at Merion

Senior Marty McGuckin fired an impressive 74 (4 over par) on the famed East course at Merion G.C. to win the 2015 Bert Linton Invitational Tournament. Under blustery, rainy conditions, McGuckin outlasted Episcopal's Chase Hummer (76) and Malvern  teammate freshman Matt Civitella (76). Civitella finished in third place after a matching of cards. Sophomore Matt Davis, winner of three Inter-Ac Invitationals this year, finished in fourth place, posting a score of 77. Other MP scores include  freshman John Updike (80), senior Jimmy Murray (84) and senior Mike Miller (91).

Coming off their big win on Saturday, the Malvern Prep soccer team kept their momentum into Tuesday afternoon's contest and shut-out Springside-Chestnut Hill. After a scoreless, even first half of play, senior co-captain David Bettenhausen scored within the first 15 seconds off the tap with an assist by Billy Coyle. Bettenhausen scored another goal later in the half, and John Papandon finished the scoring.

Malvern Prep won its first water polo game at Penn Charter in 10 seasons to claim a come-from-behind 9-8 victory. Malvern spotted the Quakers 3-0 and 5-1 leads  in the first half before clawing back to tie the score at 6.  In the third quarter, the Friars took their first lead of the game and held on for the league victory. Malvern was stellar on defense the final three quarters led by Rory Allen's 14 saves and four steals, and Aaron Salinas' shut down defense, goal scored and three assists. Isaac Salinas led Malvern's scoring with four goals and four steals. Stephen Salle contributed two goals, and four assists, and Tait McGlinn scored a pair of goals to go with three steals.

Malvern Prep traveled to Pennington, N.J., and took home a non-league win. The Friars offense was led by Stephen Salle with four goals, two assists and four ejections drawn. Tait McGlinn scored three goals and had two assists, while Isaac Salinas scored two goals with two assists and three ejections drawn. The Friar defense was strong, giving up only one goal in the second half,  led by Salinas' six steals and goalkeeper Rory Allen's 11 saves.

Malvern Prep's team defense was outstanding, holding GA to 13 shots, blocking three shots and making 11 steals in the win. Liam Close and Harrison Grant led the Friars with three steals each. Four Friars Compete in World Series of Youth Lacrosse in Denver

This past summer, four 8th Grade Friars participated in the inaugural Warrior World Series of Youth Lacrosse tournament presented by The Coca-Cola Company. Colin Dougherty, Champ Doyle, Drew Pettinelli and Cade Szostek competed as members of the Rising Sons Lacrosse 2020 team. Only ten teams were selected by a blue ribbon panel to represent different regions of the United States in the tournament, which was held July 2-4, 2015, in Denver, Colo. READ MORE

Rowing Dominates Singles Event at Navy Day Regatta

Malvern Rowing had a good day racing, finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th to 15th, in a field of 36 singles in the High School single event over 4,000 meters. Malvern scullers also raced in the open single event with sophomore Pat Keenan finishing best at 14th, and then winning the High School single event later in the day. Malvern won the Haverford School Invitational today at Gulph Mills C.C., posting a team score of 229. Freshman John Updike won medalist honors firing a 2-under par score of 33 on the difficult front side of Gulph Mills - a feat that has never been done by a freshman since the Inter-Ac has gone to the tournament format. Fellow freshman Matt Civitella also continued his stellar play by posting a 1-over par total of 36. Mike Miller - 39, Jimmy Murray - 40, Matt Davis - 40 and Marty McGuckin - 41 rounded out the team scoring.

Malvern Prep fought back from a two-goal fourth quarter deficit to tie the game at 8-8 on Steven Salle's goal (his 3rd) with 31 seconds left. With :08 left in the game Penn Charter earned a penalty shot, which was denied by the Friars goalie Rory Allen (13 saves). Aaron Salinas scored in OT to break the tie and led to the hard fought win.Aaron Salinas was also the defensive star of the game, denying numerous Quaker shots and caused several turnovers. Isaac Salinas contributed three goals and two assists, while Tait McGlinn added a pair of goals and two assists. Zach Maher and Harrison Grant also contributed with big goals for the Friars.

Malvern Prep soccer continued its undefeated streak and now stands at 8-0-1. The Friars dominated the midfield with top efforts by David Bettenhausen, Billy Coyle, Andrew Panzo and Mike Narzikul. Goals were scored by: David Bettenhausen, A.J. Traynor, Billy Coyle (2), Nate Albergo, Cullen Pina and Christian D’Ascenzo.

Water Polo Win First Beast of the East Title

Malvern Prep won its first Flight Championship with a weekend record of 4-1 at the Beast of the East Water Polo Tournament, the largest high school water polo tournament on the east coast featuring 65 teams at numerous central PA locations.

Malvern opened the Friday evening portion of the Beast of the East, with an overtime loss to Wissahickon HS 6-9 at Reading HS. Isaac Salinas had three goals, Stephen Salle a pair of goals and Zach Maher had a goal and an assist. The team quickly rebounded to beat the host team 14-4 behind a solid team defensive effort and 16 steals. Maher and Salle had three goals apiece in the win, while Isaac and Aaron Salinas and Adam Yablonski added two goals each.

The Friars continued its stellar team defense Saturday at Central York HS. Malvern held Upper Dublin HS to a single goal behind strong goal tending and defense winning 14-1. Rory Allen and Turner Emery combined for 12 saves. Isaac Salinas had four goals and two assists, Stephen Salle had four goals and three assists, and Harrison Grant had three goals and five steals to lead the Friars' offense. In game two on Saturday, Isaac Salinas had five goals and Stephen Salle had four goals, while Tait McGlinn, two goals, five assists, three steals, and Aaron Salinas, three steals, were the defensive leaders.

In the Championship game the Friars faced The Lawrenceville School, N.J.  Malvern's defense and solid play in goal were keys to the title win. In the 9-1 victory, the Friar's Rory Allen made 12 saves and had two assists. Aaron Salinas made three steals and blocked a shot. Isaac Salinas had four goals, Salle added three goals and Zach Maher and Tait McGlinn each scored to secure the Beast of the East Tournament trophy.

Stephen Salle and Tait McGlinn chipped in a pair of goals, while Seamus Glynn rounded out the scoring. Team-player Mahoney '12 Takes Switch Back to Offense in Stride at Northwestern - September 18, 2015
 Mahoney, back in high school, played both offensive tackle and defensive end, but was recruited by the 'Cats to strictly play defense. He did that his true freshman year, but as a redshirt freshman he worked as both an offensive lineman and a superback. Last season, as a sophomore, he was switched back to defensive tackle, but then last spring he was once more moved to the offensive line. READ MORE

Versatile Friar Senior Is Main Line Athlete of the Week for Gridiron Exploits

The senior safety/wide receiver, an all-league performer last fall, made 17 tackles against Holy Spirit (including four for loss and one sack). Malvern Swimmers Shine at USA Swimming Junior Nationals
September 24, 2015
This summer, senior Billy Beard and Brendan Fronczak '15 competed at the USA Swimming Junior National Championships. Beard placed 5th in the 50 free in 23.16, ranking him 10th nationally in his age group; 13th in the 100 free in 51.36, ranking 11th nationally in his age group; and 15th in the 100 butterfly in 54.77, ranking 12th in the nation. Fronczak placed 22nd in the 200 breast in 2:21.21, 78th in the 200 IM in 2:12.29 and 56th in the 400 IM in 4:40.28.

Malvern Prep improved to 7-1 on the season with a non-league win at the Hill School 10-3. The Friars played impressive defense, and Rory Allen was stout in goal with 15 saves. Isaac Salinas had five steals to accompany four goals for Malvern who had 13 total steals. Stephen Salle led the Friars offense with five goals and three assists. Harrison Grant had the Friars' other goal and made three steals.

In the first game, the Friars came back to beat West Chester Henderson 3-2 after being down 1-0 at the half. David Bettenhausen, Billy Coyle and Andrew Panzo scored goals in the last 25 minutes of the game. Jake Hodlofski had nine saves in goal, and Christian D'Ascenzo and Mike Narzikul also played well for the Friars. Malvern defeated Radnor 2-0 to win the championship behind goals by Valentino Badalamenti and Narzikul. Hodlofski had five saves in the shutout.

Malvern hit for seven plays of 20 yards or more and piled up 524 yards in rolling to a 37-0 win over the Mustangs at Soldier Field. The Friars, 7-4 last year, held St. Rita to 65 yards and two first downs. While the Mustangs' offense struggled, Malvern quarterback Nick Maras had a field day, completing 17 of 21 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns. READ MORE

Cullen'17 Wins Summer Series Sailing Championship

Malvern Prep Sailing team captain Kieran Cullen ’17 earned the Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (MAYRA) summer series championship in the laser fleet. Cullen was honored at an awards ceremony held at Sea Isle City Yacht Club on August 18. The championship recognizes the low point scorer in a racing series contested over eight weeks of the summer at eight different yachts clubs in New Jersey.  Incoming Malvern freshman Brendan Lord ’19 tied with Cullen in overall point total for the series, but Cullen won the tie breaker based on a first place finish in the final race of the season held last Thursday at Wildwood Yacht Club.

Over the past decade there has been an increased awareness pertaining to concussions and long-term health risks associated with contact football. Despite this, over one million students will participate in high school football programs across the country this fall according to studies. Football is still the high school sport with the highest level of participation in America. Football is also America’s most popular spectator sport. But for all the popularity and immense revenue that college and professional football generate, safety issues are a dark cloud looming over the sport. One major attempt to address these concerns was on display on Saturday, July 25 when USA Football’s program Heads Up came to Malvern Prep. Cruising through seven innings against the short-handed Atlanta Braves Friday night, Tim Cooney '09 earned his first major league win in his sixth start with a 4-2 verdict at sold-out Busch Stadium. Throwing 53 of his 74 pitches for strikes, Cooney (1-0) gave up just five hits and two runs, walking none and fanning five. Friar Sailing Team Takes Home Philly Bell Cup

This year, the Malvern Prep Sailing Team won its first Bell Cup, which recognizes the top Philadelphia-area high school team for the combined  Fall and Spring seasons. Malvern Prep overtook Conestoga in the final weeks of the season to win the title by 17 points.

Says Head Coach Dan Cullen '87 P'17, "Congratulations to 'A' boat skipper Kieran Cullen ’17 and his crew Nick Margay ’15 - the teams co-captains - for their leadership and consistency over the long course of the season that started all the way back on September 7. Malvern’s 'B' boat also played a key role with skipper Louis Margay ’18 and his crew of Pat Sayers ’18 and Tom Pero ’17 providing key races down the stretch. Also contributing in the fall were Brian Haines ’16 and Christian Franck ’18 who both sailed in many races that contributed to the championship."

Billy McDevitt ran 1:51.62 for fourth place in the high school boys elite 800-meter race at the John Hay Memorial Distance Festival at West Chester Henderson High School. The meet brings together some of the top high school and open runners on the East Coast. Colin Wills ran 4:19.54 in the high school boys elite mile run. The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association honored two Malvern Prep alumni with All-American honors last month. Matt Barrett '13, sophomore goalie at the University of Virginia, was named to the Division I Second Team, and Wes Pancoast '11, a senior defenseman at Roanoke College, was named to the Division III First Team. Pancoast played in the 2015 USILA/LaxWorld North-South Division III Game on May 22.

Seniors Danny Giannascoli and Peter Ciesielski are playing in the Valor Bowl football game Thursday, May 28 at West Chester University. The annual game is an all-star football game featuring seniors from all of the Chester County public and private high schools. Malvern was down 2-0 until a five-run sixth. Matthew Pantalone tied the game with a two-RBI hit, and Christopher Butera knocked an RBI single. Timothy Quinn added a two-RBI single. Butera gave up one earned run in six innings with four strikeouts for the win, and William Corcoran struck out two to earn the save. Chance DiFebbbo and Mark Gentilotti each had two hits. The Friars earned the top seed in the state independent school tournament for the fifth consecutive season.

Wes Pancoast '11 received first team All-ODAC honors as a senior defenseman for the Roanoke College men's lacrosse team. The team defeated Guilford College and Virginia Wesleyan before falling to Lynchburg College in the ODAC conference championship this past weekend where Pancoast was named to the All-Tournament team. After receiving an at-large bid, Roanoke lost 3-6 to Salisbury College in the first round of the Division III NCAA tournament Wednesday night. Pancoast will complete his college lacrosse career playing in the USILA Senior North/South All Star game on May 22 at Cabrini College.

At the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia in Essington, Malvern Sailing received outstanding performances from its A boat, skippered by Kieran Cullen ’17 with crew Nick Margay ’15, and its B boat of Louis Margay ’18 and Tom Pero ’17. Malvern tied with rival Conestoga for the overall season lead in the quest for the season championship Bell Cup. Malvern has seven more weekends of Cup racing, and in addition, will compete later in April in the Raritan Bay Invitational in Perth Amboy, N.J., against other regional high schools from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The team will be making its inaugural appearance in the New Jersey State High School Championships in mid-May at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club located in Oceanport, N.J.

The Malvern Prep Hockey team outshot Holy Ghost 28-23, but fell to the Firebirds 7-2 in the Flyers Cup AAA semifinals last night at Flyers Skate Zone in Philadelphia. The Friars scored on two third-period power-play goals by Michael Churchvara and Troy Stensland.

Malvern shut out Roman Catholic 7-0 on Monday to reach the semifinal round. Friars Place in Mile and Distance Medley Relay at Indoor Track States, Qualify for Nationals

Billy McDevitt ran to a fourth-place finish in the mile run in 4:17.05 and anchored the distance medley relay (DMR) team to a sixth-place finish in 10:31.89 at the Pennsylvania Indoor Track and Field Championships at Penn State University this past weekend.

McDevitt and the relay team both qualified for the New Balance National Indoor Track Chamionships at the Armory in New York City March 13-15.

Colin Wills took 10th place in the mile in 4:26.53, then came back to lead off the DMR in the 1,200-meter leg. Elijah King followed with the 800-meter leg, then Ryan Doane in the 800-meter leg before handing off the baton to McDevitt for the final 1,600 meters. Full results.

Wrestling Takes Second Place at PAISAA Tournament
February 21, 2015
The Friar Wrestling team continued it's winning ways this past weekend taking second place in the Pennsylvania Independent School State Tournament at Mercersburg Academy, two weeks after it claimed its first Inter-Ac team title since 1995.

At the state tournament, junior Matt Lattanze took first place at 145 pounds, and junior Rashon Lusane took first place at 175 pounds to lead the Friars. Freshman Michael Beard, who took second place at 170, was named PAISAA Wrestler of the Year. Malvern Head Coach Nathan Lauter was named PAISAA Coach of the Year and Malvern's Nate Wachter was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Other runners-up for the Friars at states were freshman Mark Salvatore at 106, junior Nick Lattanze at 126, junior Ben Tuohey at 138. See full results.

Mid-Distance Leads Friar Track Squad at Meet of Champions

Billy McDevitt took first place in the 800-meter run in 1:55.16 at the Greater Philadelphia Area Meet of Champions at Lehigh University on Saturday. Colin Wills took fifth place in the race in 2:00.31. See full results. Both McDevitt and Wills will compete in the mile run at the Pennsylvania State Indoor Track and Field Championship this Sunday at Penn State University. They will also team with Elijah King and Ryan Doane in the distance medley relay at states. The indoor track state championship is the only Pennsylvania championship that includes PIAA and independent schools of all sizes.

Swimming Follows Inter-Ac Championship with 4th-place Easterns Finish

Malvern Prep beat EA 99-85 at its home pool to win its third straight Inter-Ac Championship! The Friars had three triple winners in the meet.  Billy Beard won the 200 IM, 100 Back and swam the backstroke leg on Malvern's winning 200 Medley Relay. Magnus Sims won the 200 free and was a member of Malvern's winning 200 free and 400 free relays. Aaron Salinas was also a member of the winning freestyle relays and won the 50 freestyle. Malvern Prep recognized its senior class of 2015 for their final home meet: Co-Captains Brandon Fronczak and Peter Calvaresi, and Magnus Sims, David and Matt Lanetti and Zack DeCarlo.

Tom Pitt and Andy Pancoast Reunite at Track & Field Invite

Tom Pitt '12 and Andy Pancoast '14 reunited at the highly competitive New Balance Track & Field Invitational at the Armory in New York City. They went head-to-head in the high jump, and Pitt also competed in the long jump. Pitt took third in the high jump with a personal best of 6'11.5" and Pancoast took 16th with a jump of 6'8.25". Pitt also placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 22'10".

Football Players Announce College Choices on National Signing Day

Today, on National Signing Day, eight Malvern Prep senior student-athletes announced their intentions to play collegiate football. “Today is a big day for these young men,” says Malvern Head Football Coach Aaron Brady. “We are very proud of all of our seniors and look forward to following their careers. Three Friars Named to U.S. Water Polo Olympic Development Team

Senior captains Magnus Sims and Peter Calvaresi and freshman Stephen Salle have been named to the United States Water Polo Olympic Development Program's Northeast Zone team, representing the highest levels of club water polo in the country. They will travel to California this summer for training and tournament play. 

Swimming & Diving Finishes Fourth at National Catholics

January 25, 2015
Malvern finished in fourth place at the National Catholic Swimming and Diving Championships at Loyola University, Md., last weekend. The Friars were led by junior Billy Beard, who took first place in the 100 free style with a time of 45.18. Beard was also 3rd in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.14 and his 20.87 50 free lead-off split in the 200 free relay was the fastest 50 time of the championship. Beard teamed with Yaseen Thomas, Hunter Peck and Aaron Salinas for 4th in the 200 free relay.

Other finalists for the Friars were Zach Maher - 3rd place 100 butterfly (52.10), Brandon Fronczak - 4th in 200 IM (1:54.91) and 4th in 500 free (4:44.42), William Schaffer - 7th place in 200 IM (1:58.25) and 5th place 100 breast (1:00.07, Aaron Salinas - 8th place in 50 free (22.12) and 4th place in 100 breast (59.10), Magnus Sims - 7th place 100 free (48.66) and David Lanetti - 7th place in the 500 free (4:55.10). Malvern Prep's 200 Medley Relay team of Schaffer, Salinas, Maher and Thomas finished 5th with a time of 1:37.13.

Wrestling Caps Impressive Week with Dominant Win at Middletown

After beating Germantown Academy 56-16 on Thursday, the Friars earned nine first-place medals and one second-place at the Middletown, Del., Canal Classic on Saturday. Giacchino '10 Earns All-CAA Preseason Baseball Honors - January 21, 2015
Last season outfielder Joe Giacchino' 10 led the team in runs scored with 39 and in triples with five. He was second on the team in hits with 65 and in doubles with 14. He received the Perry E. Malvern Prep improved to 7-1 overall and remained undefeated in Inter-Ac league competition with a 104 - 76 win at Germantown Academy. Malvern's medley relay got the meet off to a fast start with Will Schaffer, Aaron Salinas, Zach Maher and Billy Beard touching first with a time of 1:40.25. Salinas, Maher and Beard teamed with Yaseen Thomas to touch out GA in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:30.02. Brandon Fronczak won the 200 free and Malvern cruised from there to victory. Beard also won two individual events - 50 and 100 free to lead the Friars as quadruple winner for the meet. Kieran Cullen won the diving  and Malvern touched first in each of the swimming stroke events, Zach Maher - 100 fly, William Schaffer - 100 back and Aaron Salinas - 100 Breast. Malvern is 4-0 in league with one dual meet remaining.

Relay Team Just Misses School Record, Takes Second at Yale Track Classic

Malvern's distance medley relay team of Colin Wills, Elijah King, Addison Mueller and Billy McDevitt took second place at the Yale Track Classic with a time of 10:36.29, missing a school record by .23 of a second. McDevitt came back to take sixth in the mile run in 4:23.08, and Wills took 21st out of 319 runners in the 3,000-meter run in 8:58.16. Full results.

Malvern Leads Prep-Catholic League Hockey All-Star Selections

Six Friar Varsity Ice Hockey players were selected to the ICSHL Prep-Catholic League All-Star game today, Thursday, January 1 at 5:00 p.m. at Ice Line. The six selections tie Cardinal O'Hara for the most from one school. Competing for Malvern are: Joey Abel, Michael Churchvara, Matt Hollingshead, Doug Hook, Brian Rawlins and Josh Silvestri. In addition, Malvern coaches Dave Dorman and Dave DeFusco were selected as coaches. See more info about the games here.

Five Friars were selected to the JV game, which takes place at 4:00 p.m. at Ice Line. They are: Skylar Davis, Joseph Delia, Steven Delia, Christian Ostrowski and Caroline Booraem.

Former Friar Rafferty '11 Joins Villanova Basketball Team
After serving as a practice player last season, Malvern alumnus Kevin Rafferty '11 made the Villanova basketball team as a walk-on this season. Rafferty helped the Friars to an Inter-Ac title in 2011. He transferred to Villanova after one year at Tufts. The junior has appeared in five games for the 10-0 Wildcats, hitting both of his attempted field goals.

Versatile Senior Football Player Earns Main Line Athlete of the Week

A senior, Trevor Morris was just selected as a linebacker to the U.S. Under-19 National Football Team, which will take on Team Canada Feb. 7 at Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a valuable two-way player for Malvern Prep this fall, and was selected first team All-Inter-Ac at both wide receiver and linebacker. He led the Friars in touchdowns scored, with 10. Although the race did not go as planned with several members of the team falling on the icy conditions, the Malvern Cross Country team ran a tough race at the Nike Northeast Regional Meet at Wappingers Falls, N.Y., last Saturday. Varsity Soccer Coach Steps Down

Malvern Prep’s Varsity Soccer Coach Leighton Walters has stepped down, citing the demands of his full-time job, Malvern Athletic Director Kurt Ruch announced today. Walters has coached the Friars for eight seasons, winning one Inter-Ac title in 2010.

“Leighton is a great friend to the School and the soccer program, and he will be missed,” said Ruch. “We hope that he will continue to be involved as his schedule permits to help with college selection for our student-athletes and to advise us about the future of our program. I want to thank him for his years of service and wish him the best.”

Malvern Prep plays the Haverford School at Haverford in the second round of the state independent school soccer playoffs tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11 at 3:00 p.m. Assistant coaches Jose Sanchez and Darren Hepke’05 will serve as interim head coaches for Malvern until the position is filled.

The Friars’ first-half goalie Brendan Welsh likely saved the day with two fantastic saves, one on a breakaway by the Fords and a shot at very close range. Call it Championship October. The Malvern Prep Cross Country team finished an impressive week on Saturday, October, 25, winning its second consecutive Independent School State Cross Country Championship at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Malvern Prep clinched a tie for the 2014 Inter-Ac Water Polo Championship for the second-straight year with a home win over Germantown Academy 18-14. Peter Calvaresi and Magnus Sims were outstanding at the offensive end of the pool scoring seven goals apiece. Sims added five assists, two steals and Calvaresi had two steals and an asssit. Alex Yablonski scored three goals and Tait McGlinn added a goal for the Friars. Malvern Prep finishes its regular season at 20-5 overall and 7-1 in the Inter-Ac.

The Friars fought back with three unanswered goals, two on penalty kicks, to beat GA. A.J. Traynor scored at 25 minutes to tie the game, then Mike Narizkul banged home a rebound of his own penalty shot at the 45th minute. Traynor added another goal on a penalty shot after a handball call in the box. Billy Coyle, Chris Savino, Jason McLarney, Dave Bettenhausen, Nick Gabriele and Andrew Panzo also had strong showings. Jake Hodlofski was solid in goal.

Malvern rowing had a good day at the HOS Regatta. All Malvern Varsity and JV rowers races singles, with a best 7th place out of 44 Varsity Scullers. JV single rowers finished 3rd, 5th, and 7th in their event. Varsity rowers raced again, finishing 3rd in the Varsity Quad event out of 18 schools and clubs racing. Freshman raced in the Novice/Freshman quad event, finishing an encouraging third in a tough event. The team will continue to practice at the Conshohocken Rowing Center, racing next at the Frostbite Regatta and Braxton Regatta in Mercer, N.J. November 8 & 9. See photos here.

Sims Earns Main Line Athlete of the Week Honors

Sims, senior co-captain of the Malvern Prep water polo team, is the leading scorer (72 goals as of Oct. 20) for the Friars (16-4, 5-1). In addition to averaging more than three goals per game, Sims leads the team in steals on the defensive end of the pool with just under three steals per contest. Last fall, he was a first team All-Inter-Ac selection for the Friars, who were Inter-Ac co-champions and finished second at Easterns. Rowing Continues Successful Fall Season

Malvern had a good weekend, racing in the Varsity Single and High School Single events on Saturday at the PCF regatta in Philadelphia, finishing first to ninth and first to 11th, with MP rowers fighting for the top slots on the team. Malvern rowers raced Sunday at the CRC against The Haverford School, winning nine races of ten. Malvern next races Sunday at the Head of the Schuylkill.

Golf Places Second in Inter-Ac with Second-place Finish at EA Invite

Haverford edged Malvern 228-234 at the Episcopal Invitational at Merion West and claimed the Inter-Ac team title, while Malvern finished second in the league. Brendan Bacskai and Nick Fizzano paced Malvern with 1-over par scores of 36. Mike Szipszky, Jack Hagan and freshman Matt Davis all posted 40. Malvern's final Inter-Ac record is 25-4-1. Next up is the Bert Linton Individual Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club on October 22, followed by the PAISSA State Team Championship at Brookside Country Club on October 25.

Water Polo 9, Penn Charter 8 - Earns Share of League Title

Malvern Prep beat Penn Charter at home to avenge an earlier season loss in the first overtime period on a penalty goal by Magnus Sims to claim a share of first place in the Inter-Ac League! Sims had four goals, two assists and five steals on the afternoon to lead the Friars. Patrick Coffey made 17 saves in goal and made six steals to cap a solid effort in goal. Peter Calvaresi and Isaac Salinas each scored two goals, and Stephen Salle scored a goal to complete the scoring. Tait McGlinn had four assists, while Alex Yablonski played excellent defense and drew the penalty shot in the overtime. The victory puts the Friars and Quakers both at 4-1 atop the Inter-Ac League standings. Malvern is 14-4 overall and is in the top three in Eastern Prep water polo rankings to date.

Mike Narzikul banged home a rebound at the 23rd minute to give the Friars a lead. Nate Albergo got off a strong shot that was punched away by the Quaker goalie, only to be redirected out of the box by Chris Savino to set up the score. Penn Charter quickly tied it at the 29th minute, setting up an intense, physical contest the rest of the way. The Friars had a few scoring changes in the second period and overtime, but could not convert.

Magnus Sims was a dominant force on offense with six goals and two assists. Peter Calvaresi scored three goals, had two assists and five ejections drawn to help the offensive cause. Tait McGlinn and Isaac Salinas had a goal and two assists each. Zach Maher and Charlie Reid rounded out the Friars' scoring with a goal each. Malvern was equally impressive on team defense with 14 steals, three blocked shots and 23 saves by goal keepers Patrick Coffey and Rory Allen.

In one of the most competitive meets in the country, the Malvern Cross Country team ran away from the field to take first place at the Paul Short 5k Run at Lehigh University. Jaxson Hoey finished fourth in 15:36, and Billy McDevitt finished seventh in 15:40. The Friars had a :50 1-5 spread and a 16:05 average time. Josh Hoey finished 29th in 16:17; Colin Wills finished 37th in 16:34; and Ryan Doane finished 41st in 16:26. Full results.

Mike Narzikul scored a hat trick for the Friars in the fast-paced affair. He scored the first goal at 22 minutes, followed by an 18-yard shot by Tyler Barr off a pass from Jason McLarney. Narizikul's second came on a penalty shot before the half to put the Friars up 3-1. His third came at 57 minutes, then AJ Traynor scored on an assist from Nate Albergo at 63 minutes.

Senior tri-captains Magnus Sims, Peter Calvaresi and Patrick Coffey all played stellar water polo in the home win. Coffey recorded 19 saves, two assists and two steals in goal. Sims had four goals, three assists, four steals and three drawn ejections, while Calvaresi also had four goals and had two assists, three steals and six ejections drawn. Isaac Salinas tallied twice and Tait McGlinn was the other goal scorer for the Friars.

Two Friars Take Firsts at Youth Weighlifting Meet

On September 20, 8th graders Dan King and Harry Stinger won first place at the White Rose Barbell Open in York. King took first place in the 13 and under 50 kg weight class with a total of 72 kg. Stinger took first in the 13 and under 69 kg weight class with a total of 120 kg. Stinger's total qualified him for the 2015 USA Youth National Championships in Minnesota. Friar Wrestlers Earn Medals at Top Preseason Invite

On September 21, five Malvern Prep Wrestlers participated in the prestigious FloWrestling Iron Horse National Invitational Tournament in South Plainfield, N.J. This “invitation only” event features some of the best wrestlers in the country. All five Malvern Prep wrestlers placed in what is considered one of the toughest preseason events in the country. Junior Matt Lattanze won his bracket in dominating fashion to win his first Iron Horse Championship. Freshman Chris Hisey also won his first Iron Horse Championship as he upset a highly ranked senior in his final match to claim his bracket. Hisey was also named the tournament’s “Rookie Outstanding Wrestler” as he won one of the most competitive brackets in the tournament. Junior Nick Lattanze and freshmen Mark Salvatore each placed Second and Freshmen Michael Beard placed Third for Malvern Prep.

Malvern golf finished second at the Springside-Chestnut Hill tournament with a 4-1 record. Nick Miller, the #1 ranked player in the Inter-Ac, again paced MP with a 2-over par score of 38. Mike Lamond and Matt Davis shot rounds of 39, while Jack Hagan posted a 40.

Malvern Prep opened its Inter-Ac league schedule at Penn Charter and fell to the Quakers 8-4. Malvern Prep led 1-0 after the first period. Penn Charter took control of the game for the final three periods. Malvern goal keeper Pat Coffey was very good and kept the Friars in the game recording 16 saves, an assist and 2 steals. Magnus Sims had 3 goals and Peter Calvaresi added a goal for the Friars on offense.

Will Grant '11, playing for the Santa Clara University Broncos, had two 3-goal games in SC's wins over Brown and Navy at the Bruno Classic at Brown. Jeff Hagen '14 is off to a solid freshman season at Bucknell University and helped the Bison to a close win over Johns Hopkins 8-7 by scoring 2 goals, blocking 2 shots and drawing 3 ejections. Dan McGlinn'14 is playing for the club team at the University of Notre Dame and was a starter in the Fighting Irish's first three wins vs. Ohio State, Miami of Ohio and Xavier. Adam Pinos '13 is playing a stellar goalie for the University of Toronto.

Breakout Performances Earn Wright Athlete of the Week Honors

A senior running back/cornerback for the Friars' football squad, Wright scored four touchdowns in Malvern's win against Holy Spirit (N.J.) in their home opener Sept. 5. Two of the touchdowns were catches of 32 and 43 yards. In the Friars' opener against Roman Catholic, he gained 161 yards combined running and receiving. Wright, who is a cousin of the late Jack Tatum (former All-Pro safety for the Oakland Raiders), has been a key contributor on Malvern's offense, defense and special teams. Malvern swimmers are fast in the pool and the divers are graceful in the air, but they are also superb students, too! The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America has recognized Malvern's 2014 Swimming & Diving Team with a Silver Level Scholar Team Award for having a cumulative team GPA of 3.616. The Malvern Prep Cross Country team had a record-setting performance in winning the Briarwood Invitational on September 13., the Internet home of high school cross country and track, has recognized the team's accomplishments with a nomination for the National Team of the Week. Malvern ran away with the victory over a stellar field, led by Jaxson Hoey, whose first-place finish in 15:30 is a school record and third-fastest time ever recorded on the course at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Dan Giannascoli's fourth-quarter field goal was the difference-maker. Trevor Morris had nine tackles and caused one fumble to lead the defense, and the running back duo of Dymond Wright and Rashon Lusane had 86 and 75 yards respectively. Wright had one rushing and one receiving touchdown.

Friar Second Baseman Named Main Line Athlete of the Week

Malvern junior David Rodgers is a sure-handed second baseman with some pop. This season he led the Inter-Ac and state champion Friars with four home runs and a .600 slugging percentage. He also batted .327 with an on-base percentage of .479, had 17 RBI's and 20 runs scored while striking out only seven times in 77 at bats, and made only two errors at the keystone position. READ MORE
