Eric Moore ’02 Helps Malvern Students Plan for Careers in Engineering

Malvern Upper School students spent some time in February investigating their potential paths to a career in engineering with Malvern alumnus Eric Moore ’02, a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and consultant with McKean Defense Group in Philadelphia. Moore met with a classroom of students, who asked questions about his day-to-day tasks at McKean and how his military experience helped him prepare for his career.

Students who attended this session followed it up with a visit to McKean and met with its Creative Design and Graphic Design Teams. They also had the opportunity to tour the USS New Jersey. READ MORE. See more photos.

Students Work with Safety Tag to Design New Product

In 2014 four students spent some time working with the development of the Safety Tag product and successfully turned that experience into a summer job. Safety Tag is a company designed and built by Malvern alumnus Michael Buono ‘89. It is a consumer-driven network targeting youth organizations (Sports Camps, Boy Scouts) which typically have non-medically trained individuals overseeing children. It is analogous to an athletic medical record for kids in youth sports that are privately linked to a coach or trainer’s application so there is a most efficient way to access the child’s information.

General Kevin P. “Chili” Chilton Talks Cyber Security with AP Computer Science

General Kevin P. “Chili” Chilton, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) visited Malvern Prep in April as the guest speaker at the 69th Annual Father-Son Banquet. During the day, he spent time with the AP Computer Science classes, led by Mr. Kevin Quinn, and had the opportunity to conduct a mock presidential briefing on cyber security for the United States of America with the students.

Fourteen of our young men conducted extensive research and prepared diligently for the meeting; and in the course of preparing, they discovered why so many people work in our government and military. The conversation served as a great precursor to college-level debates and real-life work situations for our students in the future. Gen. Chilton asked very pointed questions to our students and served as an incredible mentor.

Students Work with Public Safety Director to Map Malvern Evacuation Plans

Malvern students, under the leadership of Mr. Steve LeStrange, Public Safety Director, began a project using Lucent Chart, a Google application to draw and map out floor plans. Students learned about room dimensions and how to map out an appropriate floor plan. They will be updating all of the evacuation posters around campus. The project will resume and be completed during the 2015-16 school year.

Malvern’s Help Desk Ensures Technology-Savvy Campus

During the 2014-15 school year, the Help Desk carved out its own working area in the Learning Commons under the mentorship of Mr. Nathanial Duane, Technology Support Specialist. The group of twelve students worked on several projects involving technology at Malvern Prep.

They assisted with the set-up of the new Chromebooks that Malvern Faculty will be using during the 2015-16 school year. They also helped make the Ethernet cables that were used to get the Help Desk up and running in the Learning Commons. The students manned the Help Desk during Community Time and were available to provide assistance to their peers with any technology-related issues or concerns.
