Spiritual Life

Malvern weaves together all expressions of faith to make the School community a uniquely Judeao-Christian-Catholic-Augustinian center of learning. Fostering the integration of the School’s academic curriculum, campus ministry, spiritual renewal and Christian Service programs, our aim is to create a setting where every person can learn his/her unique role in the formation of God’s Kingdom.

Our purpose is accomplished through prayer and liturgy, theological study, Augustinian spirituality, spiritual renewal and our Christian Service Program.

Prayer and Liturgy
The Augustinian friars, in collaboration with the laity, provide the Malvern community with a sustaining liturgical-prayer life, including:

  • Daily Mass is celebrated at 7:30 a.m. All are invited to attend.
  • Each school day and individual class sessions begin with prayer.
  • The Eucharist is offered and may be received daily.
  • Private centering prayer opportunities are always available in the chapel before the Holy Eucharist.
  • A weekly Morning Prayer in the campus chapel is celebrated with the School community.
  • Frequent Eucharistic liturgies are celebrated for teams, groups, classes and families, as well as for special festive occasions, feasts and seasons within the liturgical school year.
  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated, especially during the Advent and Lenten seasons.
  • An opportunity for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is provided monthly.

Opening Prayer
It is Malvern’s tradition to open each class session with a prayer.  The following prayer is commonly used and is suggested, although any appropriate prayer may be used.

“Direct we beseech you, O Lord, all our actions by Your holy inspiration and carry them on by Your gracious assistance so that every prayer and work of ours may begin with You and by You be happily ended, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.”

Theological Study
The formal theology courses of both the Upper and the Middle Schools are designed to present the Judeao-Christian-Catholic-Augustinian faith traditions to our students, and to aid them in assimilating theological conclusions and convictions into their general academic, social and personal lives.

Augustinian Spirituality
Based on the Rule of St. Augustine, we at Malvern attempt to live our lives “with one mind and one heart intent upon God.”

Spiritual Renewal
From our holy founder Augustine we learn that we are called to an on-going conversion.  On all levels, we offer renewal for our students through days of recollection that culminate in our unique M.E.C.O. (Malverians Encountering Christ in Others) retreat weekend for seniors.  Friars, too, are always available for spiritual direction and pastoral counseling.

Christian Service Program
In addition to classroom work, all students are required to participate in the Christian Service program. Christian Service is a concrete way to put faith into practice. Our Statement of Core Values directs that “members of the Malvern community will respond to a call of service.”  All Malvern Prep students are required to reflect the message of Christ and to live our mission as an Augustinian Catholic school through their service to others.
